Choosing your oil?

It will impact significantly on your car's performance and the life of your engine. And, it can also help reduce your fuel costs.

What does a Lubricant do?

  • Reduces wear and friction in an engine
  • Acts as a cooling medium by carrying away heat
  • Keeps internal components clean by controlling and dispersing deposits and contaminants
  • Protects against rust, oxidation and corrosion
  • Reduces noise

What does the product labelling tell me about my oil?

VISCOSITY
Viscosity is a measure of an oil's relative thickness, and is indicated by the SAE grade on the label. Single grade oils are identified by a single number e.g. SAE 30 or SAE 40.

Virtually all car manufacturers recommend the use of multi-grade motor oils for use with modern vehicles. Multi-grades are designed for year round use and can be identified by the "W"(winter) in the SAE grade e.g. SAE 5W-40 or SAE 10W-40. These motor oils provide the ultimate protection over a range of temperatures and conditions. Check your vehicle manual to determine the recommended viscosity grade.

PERFORMANCE or QUALITY LEVEL
European manufacturers typically specify motor oils certified to European ACEA or North American API classification systems. Some vehicle manufacturers may also require motor oils to be approved by their technical groups.

On most Valvoline products, you will find a combination of performance levels such as API SJ/CG4-4, ACEA A3, B3 and BMW Long Life. Check your vehicle manual to determine the recommended performance level.

When should I change my oil?
Follow the oil change intervals recommended by the vehicle manufacturer in the vehicle handbook. Extending oil change intervals beyond the manufacturer's recommendation can lead to reduced engine life.

What are Synthetic or Synthetic Blend motor oils?

These are high performance lubricants in which mineral base oils have been completely or partially replaced by a very high quality synthetic (man made) base oil. The chemical and physical properties of a synthetic oil are much more uniform than those of a mineral oil.
The uniformity helps ensure excellent lubrication at low temperatures and optimum protection during normal and high temperatures.

So whether you start your engine on a cold winter's morning or tow your caravan on holiday, synthetic and synthetic blend motor oils provide the performance your car depends on.
